005 Nathan Ohren on Journaling (Plus a bonus 30 day challenge)

This week I pushed up an interview with Nathan Ohren to get the word out on the 30 Day Digital Challenge. It starts on October 1!

Journaling is one of the most high leverage tactics for self improvement, problem solving and mental health. In this episode, Nathan and I talk about examples of journaling success, the three primary benefits of journaling, and the 30 Day Challenge.

I really appreciate the concept of this cast. I struggle with forming the habit. Do you or Nathan have suggestions for that?

Thanks for the comment. I don’t know if Nathan has anything to say about this. I think that it is like any habit you try to make: make it enjoyable, manage the cues around the task, repeat for several weeks until it seems natural.

I struggle with it too. The habit seems to come and go. I will say that I was most successful when I had a specific time set aside on Friday afternoons to do some weekly journaling.

Did this help? Any follow up questions?

Yes, Theresa! My website has all kinds of tips for beginners as well as seasoned journal-writers. The funny thing is, no matter how long you’ve been keeping a journal, the same pointers apply. http://www.write4life.us/restarting-the-habit is among my most popular posts.

For those who have difficulty even getting started, I offer this encouragement. Start small. But don’t write about the “fluff” of your life. Write about a secret you’ve never shared with anyone before. Go deep. Get something heavy off your chest. Write like NOBODY is watching, and see what surfaces. Once you start to see the value of having a virtual “best friend” in your journal, it will be much easier to continue!

I hope that helps! For other ideas, check out my podcast on journal-writing: http://www.Write4Life.us/JournalTalk

And, thanks Jason, again for the opportunity to share with your audience. You’re building a better world by helping us all to focus on building a better self. Keep on!

      Nathan,

Thank you for being on my podcast and for your response to Theresa.

We’re getting to the end of the 30 day challenge. How did it go for you?
